December 19, 2018 will be a day to remember for many a young heart at the Children’s National Hospital in Northwest Washington.
Former President, Barack Obama, visited the hospital with a trunk full of goodies for the kids. Wearing a Santa cap and throwing a bulging trunk of gifts over his shoulder, Barack Obama got America and the entire world, teary-eyed by becoming Santa Claus for the child-patients.
Change will not come if we wait for some other person, or if we wait for some other time.Barack Obama
Obama-Santa’s gifting spree
Thank you @BarackObama for making our patients’ day so much brighter. Your surprise warmed our hallways and put smiles on everyone’s faces! Our patients loved your company…and your gifts! https://t.co/bswxSrA4sQ ❤️ #HolidaysAtChildrens #ObamaAndKids pic.twitter.com/qii53UbSRS— Children's National 🏥 (@childrenshealth) December 19, 2018
The first group of children he met were all under 4. He spent a jolly good time with them, making snowflakes in the hospital’s playroom. Following this, he distributed adorable gifts to each of them. Some of these gifts included Hot Wheels sets, shiny nail polish, constructibles, jigsaw puzzles (a memento from his own life, and apparently his grandmother’s favourite) among others.
After greeting the first party of children, Obama visited patients in their hospital rooms; sharing warm and memorable moments with child-patients and their parents.
In a candid moment with a 12-year old in one of the hospitals rooms, the former POTUS and current day Santa, shared heart-warming tips to survive high school. The child, apparently worried about high school, had shared her concern with Obama hoping to get some advice. His words didn’t disappoint. Apparently, “even the cool kids don’t have it all figured out.”
Obama-Santa is sweeter than candy. Here’s proof!
Right before leaving, Obama genuinely thanked the doctors, nurses and janitors for choosing to work during the holidays. He even left a video message on the internal system of the hospital for any patients who were absent or unavailable to meet him during his visit.
You may want to reach out for that tissue roll now, ’cause what happened next is only going to make you cry even harder
The 90 minute visit was not left unnoticed. Though only few knew of the former President’s visit, word spread like wildfire in the neighbourhood. All the doctors, residents and nurses in the area came rushing to the nearby nursing station at Children’s National Hospital.
Merry Christmas and happy holidays to the extraordinary kids, families, and staff at Children’s National. And thanks for humoring me as your stand-in Santa. https://t.co/mFmYCVk7cr— Barack Obama (@BarackObama) December 19, 2018
Here’s what people did!
In what seemed to be a reciprocated act of gratefulness, the crowd cheered on as Obama began his departure. All the cheering and clapping eventually lead to an unforgettable choir of voices singing, “We wish you a Merry Christmas!”
Chief Executive Officer and President of Children’s National Health System, Kurt Newman said that Obama’s Santa act will be the talk of the town for many years to come.
At such a busy time of year, when no one wants to be in the hospital, his natural warmth lifted the spirits of those kids, their parents and of each staff member he met along the way.Kurt Newman, CEO ,Children’s National Health System
We can’t put this in simpler words than what Obama himself has said:
I’m the president of the United States. I’m not the emperor of the United States.Barack Obama
We wish you a very Merry Christmas and a joyous New year Barack Obama! Stay Blessed.
