With the Oscars just about round the corner, all the attention has centered around comedian and actor, Kevin Hart. The star has recently come under fire for his anti-gay comments way from back in 2010 and 2011.
Speaking of why these tweets of his surfaced, the Jumanji star implied that it was most probably a hater group on Twitter, trying to ruin his career for good. He went on to mention that they calculated the time when he would be in the spotlight the most, i.e. The Academy Awards function, and dug out the bones from coffins buried long back.
The comedian had long back, posted quite a few tweets, making light of the gay community and in turn hurt sentiments of the LGBTQ+ community. Some of his tweets read like this:
Yo if my son comes home & try’s 2 play with my daughters doll house I’m going 2 break it over his head & say n my voice ‘stop that’s gay.Kevin Hart
Apparently, Kevin had stepped down from playing host to the 2019 Academy Awards due to these tweets re-surfacing. It is said to have been his lifelong dream to host the award ceremony. Crisis management experts said that Hart should have done the right thing, as in, apologizing to the LGBTQ+ community instead of refusing to do so and abdicating his place as host.
After seeing this @benfraserlee tweet, I did a search for every time Kevin Hart tweeted "fag," "homo," or "gay." It was…a lot. And he seems to have basically stopped tweeting those words after 2011 — i.e. the year his first stand-up movie became a hit. https://t.co/P8nTOilFgx pic.twitter.com/6uzPhnvt4F— Adam B. Sources say, that Academy of Motion Picture Arts had given the comedian an ultimatum after his tweets re-surfaced. Demanding that he either apologize immediately for his words or step down from hosting the ceremony. Hart, publicly chose the latter, saying that he has moved on from his past.
His refusal to send out an apology was perhaps best documented in this statement he gave in 2015. While speaking to Rolling Stone Magazine Hart said;
What you want to do is distinguish a comedian’s body of work vs something that sounds personal.Kevin Hart
The reason behind his behaviour
Hart apparently was hesitant to issue an official apology because he felt that he had addressed these old tweets one too many times. He feels that he has explained the intent behind his tweets, and has also apologized many times.
The comedian claims that this is a stunt that people are trying to pull off so that they can make money using his past mistakes. He has reportedly taken down his anti-gay tweets keeping this in mind.
Tables may have turned
Ellen, a popular talk show host, though, chose to step in and help him clear his slate. In an interview with Kevin, on her show, she said that she wanted him to host the Oscars.
The night will be about you and it should be about you , and you should host the Oscars, and I’m going to talk you into it.Ellen DeGeneres
Kevin has now issued a public apology for his offensive tweets of old and has also stepped down from hosting the Oscars. He said that, he understood to not joke like his old self and he doesn’t do it anymore.
Also, turns out the Academy Awards board are still keen on having the comedian as their host. Whether Kevin will step in and take the place though, only time can tell.
