Rami’s Journey in becoming Freddie
When asked to step into Freddie Mercury’s shoes for his new role in the film, Rami couldn’t stop himself. He instinctively said yes without much thought to it, as he narrated in an interview. It was only when the shooting had begun, that Rami realized the marathon he was about to run, in the road of becoming Freddie Mercury.
You don’t wanna mimic Freddie!; you want to be able to understand and why he did what he did.”Rami Malek on becoming Freddie Mercury
Rami was transformed into Freddie, not just by make-up, matching false teeth and a perfect prosthetic nose, but also by rigorous physical training.
He spent hours every day being trained by a choreographer and a movement expert, Polly Bennet.
Rami’s Diet and Body Training
The Physical transformation of Rami was much less diet based than being movement based.
You need to understand why this man moves the way that he did. That’s what’s helpful for an actor. Rami isn’t a dancer. Therefore I shouldn’t be treating him as one.”Polly Bennet, Movement Director for Rami Malek
With an expert like Polly deconstructing Freddie’s movements, Rami caught up with the character and finally merged with it to become ‘The Freddie Mercury’.
When he did the whole section, beat by beat, gesture for gesture, breathing at the right time, flipping the microphone at the right time, not skipping a line, picking up a guitar, playing the right chords-proud doesn’t even begin to describe it.”Polly Bennet on Rami Maleks performance as Freddie Mercury
Brian May’s wife, Anita reportedly broke out in tears when she saw Rami walk into the set as Freddie Mercury. Such was the resemblance and liking he bore to Mercury.
Brian May, 71, was all praise for Rami and said that he was just incredible. He said that Rami inhabited Freddie to the point where everyone thought of him as Freddie!
All the physical transformations aside, Rami was perfect for the role of Freddie, producer Graham King thought so; and after his performance in Bohemian Rhapsody, we and the whole world think so too!
