What a time to be alive!
Egyptian actress Rania Youssef was charged obscenity charges for her fashion choices on a red carpet event. The 45-year-old actress chose to wear a black dress to the International Cairo film festival and had to face a huge backlash for choosing the dress. She had to issue an apology for donning the sheer black dress that got her into trouble.
Three lawyers based in Egypt have sued her on the grounds of incitement to debauchery and public obscenity. One of the the lawyers stated that the dress did not meet societal values, traditions, and morals and therefore undermined the reputation of the festival. It also demeaned the reputation of Egyptian women in particular. Egypt’s actor’s guild stated that it will begin to strictly policy the attire of the actors and the actresses at the opening and closing of this grand ceremony. The ceremony usually lasts a week long. They issued a statement saying, “Although we absolutely believe in the personal freedom of artists, we appeal to everyone to shoulder their responsibilities toward the fans who appreciate their art and view them as role models. That should compel them to exercise a minimum level of commitment to society’s public values.”
Apology issued by Rania
Rania Youssef took to Facebook to apologize about her dress and how she misjudged the reactions. She also stated that she wants to repeat her commitment to the values and ethics that she has been raised by, in the Egyptian society. The pictures of the actress are going viral and many are criticizing her mercilessly, while some are livid about the whole thing. There have been heated discussions that something as silly as a women’s choice of clothing has become the topic of the nation. Rania Youssef also issued an apology to the Egyptian family and society for this incident stating that it was unintentional.
Withdrawal of the law suit
The three lawyers have now withdrawn their lawsuit against the actress. When questioned about it, they said that the legal action wasn’t for the purpose of personal gains or benefits, nor was it intended to deprive her as a person. It was only out of concern for public order and ethics, and sensing the danger facing the Egyptian society. As a result, the incident committed by a popular public figure with an audience that will try to imitate them, may spread chaos and violate of standards of values and ethics.

They affirmed their full respect and appreciation for the art and the artists. They also assured that the legal procedures had been taken against a certain incident which according to them surpassed the limits of freedom and social custom and contradicted the provisions of the law. The law regulates the relationship of the individual towards the society and constitutes a crime punishable, if deliberately committed. The freedom of thought, creativity, opinion, expression and other freedoms are compatible with the international conventions and conventions stipulated in the Egyptian Constitution though.
Call for total responsibility
Finally, they called upon all public figures, artists as well as others to take into account their behaviour as role models and as the highest ideals for many young men and women in Egypt.
Well, let’s hope that they come together at large and address these issues along with the more serious issues like corruption, sexual harassment, poverty, and child abuse.
